Unleashed: 2024 Toyota Supra Review

In Toyota’s predominantly consumer-focused lineup, the GR series stands out as the pinnacle of performance, with the 2024 GR Supra leading the charge. While it shares a platform and production line with the BMW Z4 convertible, the GR Supra boasts a distinct and captivating aesthetic. Under the hood, both models offer a choice between a 255-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder and a potent 382-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine. All Supra variants feature rear-wheel drive and the option of an eight-speed automatic or, for enthusiasts, a highly favored six-speed manual transmission.

Inside, the Supra draws inspiration from BMW’s componentry, eliciting mixed opinions from enthusiasts. Nevertheless, it delivers a comfortable and spacious cabin, accommodating two adults comfortably even during extended journeys. The Supra’s true essence, however, emerges on twisty roads, where its precise handling and dynamic powertrains make it a joy for spirited driving, although it might not be the ideal choice for lengthy highway cruises.

What’s New for 2024?

In 2024, Toyota‘s iconic sports car maintains its classic appeal, with minimal updates. However, the highlight of the year is the introduction of the exclusive 45th Anniversary Edition model, limited to just 900 units. This special edition variant features the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine and offers a choice of striking white or vibrant orange paint options. Complementing its unique appearance are matte-black wheels, a stylish black body-side graphic, and a rear spoiler that can be manually adjusted to suit your preferences.

The 2024 Toyota Supra has a starting price of $46,635, with the range-topping model priced at $65,470. The base trim level is equipped with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while all other trims feature a turbocharged inline-six engine. While the four-cylinder GR Supra 2.0 offers an engaging driving experience, the exhilarating acceleration delivered by the six-cylinder 3.0 justifies its higher cost.

We recommend foregoing the Driver Assist package, which includes features like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and a lane-keeping assist system that may be more bothersome than helpful. Opting for the new six-speed manual transmission, which is available at the same price as the automatic, is a no-brainer for enthusiasts.

Additionally, each GR Supra purchase includes a one-year membership to the National Auto Sport Association (NASA), a sports car racing sanctioning organization, as well as a complimentary day at a high-performance driving event. By opting out of the Driver’s Assist package, you can allocate your savings toward more track time and fresh tires

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Prior to 2023, all Supra models exclusively featured an eight-speed automatic transmission paired with rear-wheel drive. However, in the previous year, a significant update arrived with the introduction of a long-awaited six-speed manual option, but it was exclusive to the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine.

Our testing of the 2020 GR Supra 3.0, equipped with the eight-speed automatic, revealed impressive acceleration capabilities. It sprinted from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds and reached 100 mph in 9.5 seconds. Opting for the six-speed manual transmission slightly extended those figures to 3.9 seconds and 9.6 seconds for the same milestones. This places the GR Supra in the league of high-performance vehicles, competing head-to-head with the likes of the Chevy Camaro SS, Porsche Cayman GTS, and BMW M2 Competition. Remarkably, it even outpaces the legendary fourth-generation Supra, which boasted a sequentially turbocharged inline-six engine with 320 horsepower.

Despite its potent performance, the GR Supra maintains a comfortable suspension setup suitable for daily driving. Its steering is precise, well-weighted, and offers direct feedback, enhancing its overall enjoyable driving experience.

The more affordable four-cylinder model showcased impressive performance as well, achieving a brisk 4.7-second 0-60 mph time during our test track evaluation. Notably, it outpaces its German counterpart, the BMW Z4, which recorded a 5.0-second 0-60 mph time.

One noteworthy caveat is that our long-term GR Supra exhibited challenges in snowy conditions, highlighting a potential limitation in inclement weather.
