How to export a car from the UAE
Exporting a car registered in Dubai takes one RTA Export Certificate, a clean traffic record and a way to get the car out: a shipping agent, or driving it across the border. The steps and fees below follow the RTA's own export certificate service as published in October 2026.
The steps
- Clear the car. Pay every traffic fine on it first. A car with a bank loan also needs the bank's release before the registration can be cancelled.
- Check the destination's rules before you buy. Age limits, spec and steering side differ by country. Saudi Arabia, for example, needs approval from the Saudi Ports Authority for a light vehicle over 5 years old or a classic car.
- Apply for the Export Certificate. Use the RTA website, the RTA Dubai app, DubaiNow or a vehicle inspection centre, and choose whether a shipping agent takes the car or it is driven out. A car whose registration has expired needs a technical inspection, which has to be done in Dubai.
- Hand over the Dubai plates within 14 days. After that the application is cancelled and the fees are not refunded. Remove any window tint before the car leaves. Cars driven out get blue export plates and may only use the main roads leading out of the country.
- Ship it. The shipping agent named on the certificate takes the car out through Dubai Customs. If it was driven out, the export plates are handed to customs in the destination country.

The AED 20 in every row is the RTA's Knowledge and Innovation fee, and the AED 350 and AED 50 are the change of ownership and selling fees. Opening a Dubai traffic file, if you have none, costs AED 200. A replacement certificate costs AED 120.
What to bring
- Your Emirates ID, or a copy of your passport if your visa has been cancelled.
- The registration card (Mulkiya), which is taken back when the certificate is issued.
- If the certificate is issued to a buyer, a copy of the buyer's passport. The buyer does not need to attend.
- If the seller cannot attend, a sale and purchase agreement from an authorised showroom in Dubai.
