The car running costs UAE drivers face went up on 1 October 2026, and by more than most people realise. The UAE Fuel Price Committee raised prices by AED 0.60 a litre: E-Plus 91 to AED 4.21, Special 95 to AED 4.28, Super 98 to AED 4.40 and diesel to AED 4.80. That is the first time in 2026 and only the second time ever that UAE petrol has crossed AED 4 a litre, and it sits just AED 0.23 below the all-time high set in July 2022. These rates apply from 1 to 31 October 2026.
What the Rise Costs Per Fill
| Fuel grade | October 2026 (AED/litre) | Change |
|---|---|---|
| E-Plus 91 | 4.21 | +0.60 |
| Special 95 | 4.28 | +0.60 |
| Super 98 | 4.40 | +0.60 |
| Diesel | 4.80 | +0.60 |
Per fill, the arithmetic is unforgiving: a 40-litre tank costs AED 24 more than it did in September, and a 120-litre tank costs AED 72 more. Those two figures are the clearest way to understand the change, because they show it scales directly with what you drive. A Corolla owner absorbs AED 24 a fill; a Patrol owner absorbs three times that, on a vehicle that already empties its tank faster.
The Annual Number by Vehicle Size
The figures below are worked estimates, not measured data. They assume Special 95 at AED 4.28, three fills a month, and the tank capacities typical of each class. Your own consumption will differ.
| Vehicle class | Tank (litres) | Per fill (AED) | Est. per year (AED) | Added by the rise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compact sedan | 45 | 193 | 6,940 | +864 |
| Mid-size SUV | 60 | 257 | 9,245 | +1,152 |
| Large SUV | 93 | 398 | 14,338 | +1,785 |
The conclusion that matters is in the last column. The fuel rise alone added somewhere between AED 864 and AED 1,785 a year depending on what you drive, before anything else changed. For a household running two large SUVs, that is well over AED 3,000 of new annual cost appearing with four weeks' notice. That is the scale at which people reasonably start reconsidering the vehicle itself.
Salik Is the Cost People Forget
Salik stopped being a flat charge in January 2025 and most drivers still budget as though it were. Since the VAT change of 1 June 2026 the rate card is AED 6.30 per crossing at peak (06:00 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 20:00, Monday to Saturday) and AED 4.20 off-peak, with crossings between 01:00 and 06:00 free and Sunday a flat AED 4.20 all day.
| Commute pattern | Per day (AED) | Per year (AED) |
|---|---|---|
| 4 crossings, peak hours | 25.20 | ~6,552 |
| 4 crossings, off-peak | 16.80 | ~4,368 |
| Saving from shifting hours | 8.40 | ~2,184 |
That table contains the single best-value action in this article. A four-crossing commute costs about AED 6,552 a year on a peak schedule and AED 4,368 off-peak: AED 2,184 of pure timing, no change of car, route or job required. Activating a new tag costs AED 52.50. Figures are from our Salik charges guide, which carries the full rate card.
UAE Car Running Costs: Insurance, Service and Tyres
Insurance is the second-largest fixed cost after depreciation and the one most people overpay. Comprehensive cover is quoted as a percentage of declared vehicle value, so it falls automatically as the car ages, which means a renewal quote that is flat year-on-year is effectively a price increase. Shop it annually; our UAE car insurance guide covers what affects the premium.
Servicing in the UAE is more frequent than in temperate markets, commonly every 10,000 km for mainstream vehicles, because heat and dust shorten oil and filter life. Tyres are the cost UAE drivers underestimate most: summer tarmac temperatures degrade rubber regardless of tread depth, and a tyre with legal tread but four years of Gulf heat behind it is a genuine safety risk. Budget on age, not just wear.
The cost nobody puts in a table is depreciation, and for most owners it dwarfs everything above. A car losing AED 20,000 of value in a year is costing you more than its fuel, its tolls and its insurance combined. It simply does not arrive as a monthly bill, so it does not feel like a cost. That is why the vehicle you choose matters far more to your annual outlay than the grade of petrol you put in it.
Does Switching Vehicle Actually Pay?
Only sometimes, and the honest answer requires subtracting the transaction cost. Moving from a large SUV to a mid-size one saves roughly AED 5,100 a year in fuel on the estimates above, a real saving. But selling and rebuying costs you the trade-in spread, an ownership transfer at AED 350 administratively or around AED 400 to AED 480 all in per AlbaCars' April 2026 breakdown, and a fresh depreciation curve on the replacement.
The maths works if you were going to change cars anyway in the next twelve months. It usually does not work as a standalone response to a fuel rise, because the first year's saving is swallowed by the switch. If you are considering an electrified vehicle, the case is stronger on fuel and weaker on purchase price. Browse electric cars and run the total through the car loan calculator before deciding, rather than reasoning from the pump price alone.
Four Things That Genuinely Cut the Bill
Use the grade your manufacturer specifies and no higher. Running Super 98 in a car designed for Special 95 costs you AED 0.12 a litre for no benefit, about AED 11 on a 93-litre fill, or AED 400 a year. Second, tyre pressure: under-inflation is the most common and most easily fixed cause of excess consumption, and UAE heat changes pressures significantly between a cool morning and a 45°C afternoon. Third, shift your Salik crossings out of peak hours where your schedule allows, worth about AED 2,184 a year on a four-crossing commute. Fourth, shop insurance every single renewal.
What does not work: driving slower on Sheikh Zayed Road to save fuel while adding Salik gates to your route, or deferring a service to save a few hundred dirhams on a car that then eats a turbocharger.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the petrol price in the UAE for October 2026?
E-Plus 91 is AED 4.21 a litre, Special 95 is AED 4.28 and Super 98 is AED 4.40, with diesel at AED 4.80. All four rose by AED 0.60. These rates, set by the UAE Fuel Price Committee, apply from 1 to 31 October 2026.
How much did the October 2026 fuel rise add to running a car?
A 40-litre tank costs AED 24 more per fill and a 120-litre tank AED 72 more. On worked estimates of three fills a month, that is roughly AED 864 extra a year for a compact sedan, AED 1,152 for a mid-size SUV and AED 1,785 for a large SUV.
How much does Salik cost per month in Dubai?
Since June 2026 Salik is AED 6.30 per crossing at peak and AED 4.20 off-peak. A four-crossing daily commute costs roughly AED 546 a month on a peak schedule or AED 364 off-peak, about AED 6,552 against AED 4,368 a year, so timing alone is worth AED 2,184.
Is it worth switching to a smaller car because of fuel prices?
Rarely on its own. Dropping from a large to a mid-size SUV saves around AED 5,100 a year in fuel, but the trade-in spread, roughly AED 400 to AED 480 in transfer costs and a fresh depreciation curve usually absorb the first year. It works if you were changing cars anyway.
Does using higher-octane fuel save money in the UAE?
No, unless your manufacturer requires it. Super 98 costs AED 0.12 a litre more than Special 95 (around AED 11 on a 93-litre fill, or roughly AED 400 a year) with no benefit in an engine specified for 95. Check the fuel-filler flap or the owner's manual.
Where to Look Next
Current rates are published monthly on the CarsClub petrol prices page, which is the quickest way to recalculate when the committee next moves. If the numbers have genuinely changed your thinking on what you drive, compare sedans against SUVs and look at cars under AED 50,000 for a cheap second vehicle to take the commuting miles. Check what your current car is worth with the valuation tool before committing to anything. Fuel retail information is published by ADNOC Distribution and toll details by Salik.
