How to Check a Used Car's Real Mileage in the UAE

How to check car mileage UAE buyers can actually trust: RTA vehicle status records, service history, physical wear signs and how to spot an odometer rollback.

How to Check a Used Car's Real Mileage in the UAE
7 min read

If you want to check car mileage UAE sellers have declared, the number on the dashboard is the least reliable place to look. Odometer readings can be altered in minutes with equipment that costs very little, and a rolled-back odometer is one of the few used-car problems that is both common and almost invisible on a test drive.

The good news is that the UAE has a paper trail most markets do not. Vehicles here are tested and re-registered annually, and mileage is recorded each time. That creates a timeline you can check the dashboard against, if you know to ask for it.

Why mileage matters more than you think

Mileage drives price. On a mainstream sedan, the difference between 60,000km and 140,000km can be tens of thousands of dirhams. That gap is precisely the incentive behind rollback.

It also drives your risk. Major service items such as timing components, transmission fluid, suspension bushings and air-conditioning compressors are all scheduled by distance. If a car has actually covered 180,000km but reads 90,000km, you are not just overpaying. You are also skipping maintenance the car genuinely needs, in a climate that is already hard on components.

UAE conditions make this worse than it would be elsewhere. Heat accelerates wear on rubber, fluids and electronics, so a high-mileage car here has usually had a harder life than the same mileage in a temperate market.

The official record: RTA vehicle status data

This is the strongest tool available to UAE buyers, and most people do not use it.

Because vehicles must pass a technical test and re-register annually, each test creates a dated record that includes the odometer reading at that moment. Over several years this produces a mileage timeline. A car that read 120,000km at a test two years ago cannot legitimately read 80,000km today.

In Dubai, the RTA makes vehicle status and technical history information available, and reports can be obtained through RTA channels and the Emirates Vehicle Gate platform. Start at the official RTA website rather than a third-party reseller, and for the wider federal picture see the UAE Government portal at u.ae.

What to look for in the record:

Signal What it means
Mileage decreasing between tests Rollback, walk away
A long gap with implausibly low accumulation Possible rollback, or the car was off-road; ask why
Sudden jump of 60,000km+ in one year Commercial or fleet use, not fraud, but it changes the wear profile
Consistent 15,000-25,000km per year Normal UAE private usage
No test records at all Car may have been recently imported, verify origin

Service history cross-checks

Independent of the official record, service documentation gives you a second timeline.

Main-dealer service records are the most useful because they are usually digital and centralised. If a car has been serviced at an authorised dealer, that dealer can often confirm the mileage recorded at each visit. Ask the seller for permission to contact the service centre with the chassis number.

Stamped service books are useful but easier to falsify than digital records. Check that stamps are from real workshops, that dates run in sequence, and that the mileages increase consistently.

Small stickers and tags. Oil change stickers on the windscreen or door frame, tyre fitting tags, and battery date stickers all carry mileage or date information that someone rolling back an odometer frequently forgets to remove.

That last category is where most amateur rollbacks get caught. Look inside the door jamb, under the bonnet and on the windscreen corners.

Physical signs that contradict the odometer

Wear should match the reading. When it does not, believe the wear.

  • Steering wheel and gear selector. Smooth, shiny or worn-through leather on a car claiming 50,000km is a contradiction.
  • Driver's seat bolster. The outer edge of the driver's seat takes the most abuse from entry and exit. Heavy collapse on a low-mileage car is a warning.
  • Pedal rubbers. Worn pedal faces are a strong indicator. Note that pedal rubbers are cheap to replace, so brand new pedals on an older car are equally suspicious.
  • Brake pedal pivot and floor mat wear. Harder to fake than the visible surfaces.
  • Tyres. Check manufacture date codes, not just tread. A car with four matching tyres from six years ago has not covered high mileage recently, or the tyres are dangerously old regardless.
  • Windscreen pitting and paint chips. Sustained highway mileage in this region produces characteristic sandblasting on the leading edges. A genuinely low-mileage car should not have it.

Digital checks a workshop can run

Modern cars store mileage in more than one module. The instrument cluster displays it, but engine control units, transmission controllers, ABS modules and even key fobs may hold their own values.

A rollback performed on the cluster alone frequently leaves the other modules untouched, which means a proper diagnostic scan can expose the discrepancy immediately. Any competent workshop with manufacturer-level diagnostic equipment can check this.

This is the single most effective check available, and it is why a pre-purchase inspection at a specialist workshop is worth far more than a visual once-over. Our used car inspection checklist covers what else that inspection should include, and it is worth pairing with a check of accident history in the UAE at the same time.

A practical verification sequence

Work through these in order. Each step is cheap and rules out a category of problem before you spend money on the next.

  1. Run a VIN check using the free VIN check tool to confirm the vehicle's identity.
  2. Request the official vehicle status record through RTA channels and compare the mileage timeline against the dashboard.
  3. Ask for service history and, with permission, verify recorded mileages with the service centre directly.
  4. Inspect wear points: steering wheel, seat bolster, pedals, tyre date codes.
  5. Check stickers and tags in door jambs and under the bonnet.
  6. Book a diagnostic scan at a workshop that can read mileage from multiple modules.
  7. Walk away from anything inconsistent. There are 1,300-plus other cars on CarsClub.

If the numbers do check out and you want to know whether the asking price is fair, the free car valuation tool gives you a market-based figure to negotiate against.

Frequently asked questions

How can I check a car's real mileage in the UAE?

The most reliable method is comparing the dashboard reading against the vehicle's official test and registration records, which capture mileage at each annual test. Obtain these through RTA channels, then cross-check against service history and have a workshop scan mileage stored in the car's other electronic modules.

Is odometer rollback illegal in the UAE?

Misrepresenting a vehicle's mileage to a buyer is fraud. If you discover a car's odometer has been tampered with after purchase, keep all documentation, including the official record, service history and diagnostic scan results, as evidence and seek advice from the relevant authorities in your emirate.

What mileage is normal for a used car in the UAE?

Typical private use runs roughly 15,000 to 25,000km per year. Substantially higher figures often indicate commercial, fleet or ride-hailing use, which is not fraudulent but means heavier wear than the same reading on a privately owned car. Substantially lower figures on an older car warrant a rollback check.

Can a workshop detect a rolled-back odometer?

Often, yes. Mileage is stored in several modules, including engine and transmission control units, ABS systems and sometimes key fobs, not just the instrument cluster. A rollback performed only on the cluster leaves mismatched values elsewhere, which manufacturer-level diagnostic equipment can read.

Does high mileage matter more in the UAE than elsewhere?

Yes. Sustained heat accelerates degradation of rubber components, fluids, batteries and electronics, so a car with 150,000km in this climate has generally had a harder life than the same car in a temperate market. Service history quality matters correspondingly more.

Buy with confidence

Mileage fraud is one of the few used-car problems that is genuinely hard to spot without doing the work, and genuinely easy to spot once you do. The official record, a service-history cross-check and a multi-module diagnostic scan will catch almost every rollback.
