Engine & Performance

2024 Toyota GR86 is equipped with a naturally aspirated horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine provided by Subaru. The acceleration was already decent in the previous generation, taking 6.2 seconds to reach 60 mph. However, the latest GR86 we tested achieved a faster time of 5.4 seconds to 60 mph and completed a quarter-mile in 14.0 seconds. This improvement is due to the more powerful 2.4-liter engine that produces 228 horsepower. The GR86’s standard transmission remains a six-speed manual, with a six-speed automatic available as an option. The manual transmission allowed the car to reach 60 mph 0.7 seconds faster than the six-speed automatic. In our initial test drive, we observed that the more potent engine felt more lively and sounded better. Additionally, the car’s handling was razor-sharp, providing excitement both on the road and on the Monticello Motor Club race track. Despite the car’s handling prowess, the suspension is forgiving enough to make it suitable for daily driving.

2024 Toyota GR86 achieves 21 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway with the six-speed automatic transmission. The GR86s with the six-speed manual achieve slightly lower EPA numbers at 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.
