Both trims get LED headlights and daytime running lights, black wheel-arch overfenders, roof rails, a rear-mounted spare wheel, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and start, a 12.3-inch screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, six speakers, and the full airbag set including a driver's knee bag, plus stability control, parking sensors and a reversing camera.
The honest read: the GXR is the one to buy, and the reason is Toyota Safety Sense 3. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are genuinely useful on Sheikh Zayed Road and in a mall car park, and a car this upright has real over-the-shoulder blind spots. Adaptive cruise control on a 100 km/h commute is worth money on its own. Paying AED 15,000 for leatherette and bigger wheels would be poor value; paying it for a driver-assistance suite you will use every day is not. If your budget genuinely stops at AED 140,000, the EXR is a complete car, but stretch if you can.
The engine is the thing people will argue about
The FJ uses Toyota's 2.7-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine, the 2TR-FE, the same basic unit that has served in Hilux and Fortuner variants for years. It makes 164 hp at 5,200 rpm and 245 Nm at 4,000 rpm, driving through a six-speed automatic and a part-time four-wheel-drive system with high and low range plus an electronic rear differential lock. Claimed economy is 10.1 km/L from a 63-litre tank.
Set expectations accordingly. This is not a powerful car. At current pump prices of AED 3.69 a litre for Special 95, as announced for September 2026, a full tank costs about AED 233 and the claimed range is roughly 636 km. That is perfectly reasonable, but the numbers matter less than the character. A naturally aspirated 2.7 with 245 Nm in a 4WD body will feel unhurried when fully loaded and climbing, and it will feel it more in July than in January. Torque peaks at 4,000 rpm, which means you work the gearbox rather than surf a wave of low-down pull.
The upside of that same choice is the one Toyota is betting on: no turbo, no hybrid battery, no particulate filter, and a service network that has known this engine for two decades. In a country where cars live in 48 °C ambient heat and get resold three times, mechanical simplicity is a feature, not a compromise. Buyers cross-shopping a turbocharged Chinese SUV with 250 hp at the same money are comparing two genuinely different bets.
Size, clearance and what it can actually do
The FJ measures 4,610 mm long, 1,855 mm wide and 1,950 mm tall on a 2,580 mm wheelbase, seats five, and offers 765 litres of cargo space. Wading depth is quoted at 700 mm. Ground clearance is quoted at 245 mm in the UAE launch coverage, though it is worth noting that a Japan-market preview published in May listed 225 mm, so confirm the figure on the spec sheet at the showroom before you plan anything around it.
The short wheelbase is the point. At 2,580 mm the FJ has a notably better breakover angle than the longer Land Cruisers, which is what makes a vehicle usable in tight wadi work rather than just on open dunes. Toyota has also fitted a three-piece bumper design whose corner sections can be replaced individually, a small detail that tells you exactly who this car is for, because the corners are what you damage first. Downhill assist control and a second-gear start function round out the off-road package.
Where the FJ sits against the rest of the Land Cruiser family
The UAE launch coverage places the FJ beneath the Land Cruiser 70, the Prado and the full-size Land Cruiser. It is the new entry point to the family, not a replacement for anything. The same coverage benchmarks its price against the Toyota Fortuner.
That Fortuner comparison is the one to take seriously. On CarsClub there are eight active Toyota Prado listings ranging from AED 99,000 to AED 292,000, and 32 Toyota Land Cruiser listings with a median around AED 220,000. A used Prado at AED 130,000 to 150,000 puts a bigger, more powerful, seven-seat vehicle in the same bracket as a new FJ. What Toyota has not published yet
Three things were not in any UAE launch source as of 20 September 2026, and anyone telling you otherwise is guessing:
- The UAE distributor is not named. Al-Futtaim Motors is Toyota's UAE distributor, so it is almost certainly them, but no FJ announcement says so.
- Warranty terms are not published. Toyota's standard UAE passenger-car cover is three years or 100,000 km and is fully transferable, per Toyota UAE, but whether the FJ carries exactly that has not been confirmed.
- Showroom availability is unclear. Prices are out, yet coverage two days after the announcement was still describing registrations of interest. Call before you drive across town.
