Extended Car Warranty UAE: Is It Worth It?

Extended car warranty UAE guide: what the law already gives you free, the overheating exclusion that matters here, real AED prices and when to just say no.

Extended Car Warranty UAE: Is It Worth It?
7 min read

Before you buy an extended car warranty UAE sellers offer at the handover desk, know this: UAE consumer law already entitles you to a free replacement or refund if the same fault is repaired three times, or if repair attempts run past 15 days. That is not a warranty you pay for. It is Cabinet Resolution No. 66 of 2023, and almost nobody selling you cover will mention it.

What the law gives you for nothing

There is no statutory minimum warranty period on a used car in the UAE. Instead the law imposes outcomes on the seller, which in practice is more useful.

Federal Law No. 15 of 2020 requires a supplier to repair, replace or refund when a fault is found, and Cabinet Resolution No. 66 of 2023 sets the specific trigger for vehicles: three repair attempts, or repair attempts taking more than 15 days, forces replacement or refund. Repairs and replaced parts must themselves be guaranteed for not less than 15 days, and spare parts must be supplied within 7 days for items in regular demand, 14 for irregular and 30 for imported.

Two provisions are worth committing to memory. A commercial agent must provide a similar vehicle free of charge if honouring a warranty takes more than seven days. And any contract term relieving the supplier of its statutory obligations is null and void, so a "sold as seen, no returns" line on a dealer's invoice does not do what the dealer thinks it does. Penalties for failing to repair or replace a defective product without charge run to two years' imprisonment and up to AED 2 million, per the UAE Government portal.

None of this replaces a mechanical warranty. It does mean you are not starting from zero.

Your existing agency warranty probably transfers

The single most commonly missed value in a used-car purchase is the warranty still attached to it.

Brand (UAE distributor) Standard cover Transfers to next owner?
Ford (Al Tayer) 5 years / 100,000 km Yes, "100% transferable"
Lexus (Al-Futtaim) 4 years / 100,000 km Yes, "fully transferable"
Toyota (Al-Futtaim) 3 years / 100,000 km Yes, "fully transferable"
Nissan (Arabian Automobiles) 3 years / 100,000 km, plus 2 years unlimited mileage Yes, contract can be transferred

A three-year-old Ford bought privately can therefore arrive with two years of factory cover still running. Sellers frequently do not know, and never price it in. Before paying for third-party cover, check the chassis number with the distributor and find out what you already have. If the answer is two more years of agency warranty, an extended policy on top buys the same thing twice.

The overheating exclusion that matters most in the UAE

Here is the line that should decide most people's answer, straight from a UAE policy's own published terms.

One of the few UAE warranty products that publishes its coverage in detail, yallacompare's car warranty, lists the air conditioning compressor and condenser as covered. The same policy's exclusions rule out "any malfunction resulting from overheat, frost or corrosion."

Read those together. In a country that routinely exceeds 45 °C, a policy covers your AC compressor but excludes failure caused by overheating. Whether a given compressor failure is classified as a covered mechanical fault or an excluded overheating fault is then a judgement call made by the party paying the claim.

That is not a reason to assume bad faith. It is a reason to read the exclusions before the inclusions, and to ask in writing how heat-related failures are assessed. The other published limits are equally worth knowing: the vehicle must be under 5 years old, mileage is capped at 150,000 km at purchase, and cover commences only after a waiting period of one month or 2,000 km. Also excluded: manufacturing and design defects, missed services, fluid leaks of any kind, normal wear, modified parts, accident damage, and consequential damage from a non-covered part failing.

What it actually costs, and what dealers include free

Most UAE warranty sellers publish no prices at all, since their sites route to an enquiry form. Two published figures exist. The yallacompare product starts at AED 1,700 plus VAT for 12 months with unlimited claims annually. Toyota UAE advertises an extended warranty from AED 999, either as a two-year extension without mileage extension or a two-year and 50,000 km extension, subject to a service-centre assessment.

Meanwhile, several used-car retailers include cover at no extra cost. Cars24 UAE provides a free base warranty of up to 12 months or 20,000 km, with a claim limit of AED 5,000 during the free period and a 30-day return policy. AlbaCars includes a standard warranty on major mechanical and electrical components for 1 year or 20,000 km. Kavak UAE has offered a complimentary one-year warranty with unlimited mileage, conditional on servicing through its own workshop.

The conclusion: if you are buying from a retailer that already includes a year of cover, paying AED 1,700 for a third-party policy in the same window buys very little. The real decision point arrives in month 13.

The servicing trap that voids cover

Agency servicing conditions are not identical.

Lexus UAE states that the vehicle must be serviced at an authorised Al-Futtaim Motors service centre, and that any repair or maintenance carried out at an independent centre will invalidate the warranty. Mercedes-Benz cover through Gargash is conditional on servicing at Gargash service centres at manufacturer intervals, with body repairs at authorised body and paint centres. Ford requires maintenance in accordance with the manufacturer's service schedule. Nissan requires servicing at the recommended intervals.

There is a genuine tension here. The Ministry of Economy has been reported as having removed compulsory dealer-only servicing and barred dealers from cancelling warranties over servicing at approved facilities, but we could not verify the enabling instrument's own published text, and the agency terms above say what they say. Treat the practical position as: while the car is under warranty, service it at the dealer. If cover is unfairly refused over independent servicing, the route is a complaint to the Ministry of Economy, not an argument at the service desk.

Frequently asked questions

Is an extended car warranty worth it in the UAE?

It depends entirely on what you already have. If the car still carries transferable agency cover, or the retailer includes a year's warranty free, buying third-party cover duplicates it. An extended policy earns its money on a car past its factory warranty that you intend to keep, and only if the exclusions still leave meaningful coverage.

Does agency warranty transfer to a second owner in the UAE?

Usually yes. Ford states its five-year, 100,000 km UAE warranty is 100% transferable; Lexus and Toyota both describe their cover as fully transferable; Nissan says the contract can be transferred. Always verify the remaining term against the chassis number with the distributor before purchase rather than trusting the seller.

What does an extended warranty not cover in the UAE?

Typically: normal wear and maintenance items, missed services, oil and fluid leaks, modified or disconnected parts, accident damage, and consequential damage from a non-covered part. Critically for this climate, at least one published UAE policy excludes any malfunction resulting from overheating, even while listing the AC compressor as covered.

No fixed period. Instead, UAE consumer law sets outcomes: under Cabinet Resolution No. 66 of 2023, three repair attempts on a vehicle, or repairs taking more than 15 days, trigger replacement or refund. Contract terms trying to waive those obligations are null and void.

Will servicing my car outside the dealer void the warranty?

It can. Lexus UAE states that repair or maintenance at an independent centre invalidates its warranty, and Mercedes cover through Gargash is conditional on dealer servicing. The safe approach is to service at the dealer while under cover and shop around once cover expires.

When to buy, and when to walk

Walk away if the car still has transferable agency warranty, if the retailer already includes a year of cover, or if the exclusions strip out the failures most likely in this climate. Consider buying if the car is out of factory cover, you plan to keep it, and you have read the exclusion list rather than the brochure. First, verify the car: run a free VIN check, work through our used car inspection checklist, and browse used cars or verified showrooms. Selling instead?
