2024 Lexus GX550 Reviews: The Lexus GX, the brand’s mid-size off-road SUV, was overdue for a facelift, and it’s finally arrived for the 2024 model year. Based on an all-new platform with an updated powertrain and a host of more modern features, the new GX550’s rugged looks are about the only thing that links it to its outdated predecessor. The new model’s boxy, Land Cruiser-inspired exterior looks like it will age well – a good thing, as the GX has a history of long product cycles. Riding on the same body-on-frame platform as the Toyota Sequoia and Toyota Tundra, the 2024 GX550 will be available with a twin-turbo V-6 powertrain – offered with and without hybrid assist – rather than the outgoing model’s V-8. It slots into the Lexus SUV range between the flagship LX luxury SUV and the TX SUV, the latter of which is similar in size but more focused on interior space and on-road refinement.

The GX has two personalities: a luxury on-roader or a trail-conquering off-roader. For buyers who plan to spend most of their time on tarmac, we’d recommend the Luxury trim, which upgrades the GX550’s interior with a host of nice-to-have features, including semi-aniline leather upholstery, 10-way adjustable front seats with massage, heating and ventilation, illuminated door sills and second-row window shades. It also comes with larger 22-inch wheels that better fill the GX’s large wheel arches for a more upmarket look. For the same price, the Overtrail+ trim offers a more rugged look and more off-road capability, but the trade-off is the loss of the GX’s third row of seats and some of the luxury items listed above. But if you’re planning outdoor adventures, it’s worth considering.

2024 Lexus GX550 Engine & Performance

A twin-turbocharged 3.4-litre V6 engine is standard on the GX550. At 349 horsepower, the turbocharged V-6 is more powerful than the previous generation GX’s V-8. A 10-speed automatic is also standard and all models come with four-wheel drive. Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims get more off-road goodies than standard, including 18-inch wheels with 33-inch all-terrain tyres, an aluminium skidplate, an adaptive suspension system with more wheel articulation, crawl control and selectable drive modes for different terrains. On the road, there is plenty of performance and the GX550 feels punchy off the line. The ride is firm, especially on the available upsized wheels. The steering is crisp and the GX’s handling is appropriate for the tall, boxy SUV that it is, but the Lexus really shines off-road. Outward visibility is excellent, which comes in handy when navigating narrow trails. During our initial test drive of the GX550, we had the chance to try out the Overtrail model’s advanced off-road technology and came away impressed. The transfer case allows the driver to select low range without locking the centre differential, giving a tighter turning radius, and the Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS) can disconnect the front or rear anti-roll bars independently to improve stability and reduce head toss.

Despite the GX’s rugged exterior, the interior is luxurious. Leather upholstery is available in a choice of colours, with Overtrail trim featuring dark green faux suede accents. Premium and Luxury trims offer three rows of seating, with room for up to seven with the standard second-row bench; a pair of captain’s chairs is optional, reducing the seating capacity to six. Overtrail models are strictly two-row affairs, seating up to five. The GX’s third row offers the option of electric controls. A cooled storage box, head-up display and digital key fob are all available as options.

All GX models come with a 14.0-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wireless connectivity, and a separate 12.3-inch digital display that can be reconfigured to show the driver a variety of information. Most models come with six USB-C ports throughout the cabin, but Overtrail and Overtrail+ models get just four; a wireless smartphone charging pad is optional. A 10-speaker stereo is standard, but audiophiles can upgrade to a 21-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound system.

Despite downsizing from a V8 to a twin-turbo V6, fuel economy doesn’t improve much over the 2023 model’s EPA estimates of 15 mpg city and 19 mpg highway. The EPA estimates the GX550 will deliver 15 mpg city and 21 mpg highway, and on our 75-mph motorway route, the GX500 Premium we tested delivered on its 21 mpg estimate.
