2024 Kia EV6 best is make the time spent driving an all-electric vehicle between charges worthwhile. Without involving its owners in the scientific experiment of owning an EV, the EV6 offers a pleasant ride, good performance and a spacious cabin. Its distractingly cool-dude styling makes sense and makes this Kia SUV look like something special rather than just another one. In terms of range, the EV6 offers an EPA-estimated 310 miles. For fun, the EV6 GT performance version delivers 576 horsepower. With a peak DC fast charge rate of around 225kW, the EV6 recharges quickly, making it easier to travel long distances on electricity. It has many advantages over competitors such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Volkswagen ID.4 and Nissan Ariya, but the EV6 is slightly more expensive than its twin, the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Both the Kia and Hyundai received 2024 Editors’ Choice awards.
We’re charmed by the 576bhp top-spec GT and its heroic performance, but we think most EV buyers will be more interested in maximum range than maximum speed. For those people, we recommend the twin-motor, four-wheel-drive Wind trim, not only because it’s the most affordable way to get all-weather traction, but also because the twin motors produce a combined 320bhp against the lower output of the single motor. The use of standard 19-inch wheels also preserves range, and the EV6 Wind with four-wheel drive is said to be good for up to 282 miles on a single charge.
2024 Kia EV6 EV Power & Performance
The EV6 is available with a single electric motor mounted on the rear axle for rear-wheel drive, or with electric motors on both the front and rear axles for four-wheel drive. While the AWD models have a total output of either 320 or 576 hp, the base rear-wheel-drive model has 167 or 225 hp. We drove a GT-Line AWD in Europe and enjoyed its satisfying acceleration, agile handling and adjustable regenerative braking settings. On our test track, the 320bhp GT-Line model managed a brisk 0-60mph time of 4.5 seconds. That’ll get you to the nearest EV charging station in no time at all. Opting for the rear-wheel-drive model offers more range – 310 miles – but it also took 6.7 seconds to reach 60 mph in our tests. If maximum straight-line speed is your priority, the 576bhp GT will do the trick – in our tests it hit 60mph in just 3.2 seconds. The Performance model sits at the top of the range and comes with enhancements such as an electronic limited slip differential, firmer suspension tuning, adaptive suspension and more powerful brakes. We also tested a 2023 Kia EV6 GT as part of a 0-150mph to 0-60mph test, where it returned from a standstill in just 31.2 seconds, just a tenth slower than a Toyota Supra.
2024 Kia EV6 Range & Battery Charging
The entry-level Light rear-wheel drive model is equipped with a 58.0-kWh battery pack, while all other EV6s come with a 77.4-kWh unit. Although the rear-drive models with the larger pack have an EPA-rated range of up to 310 miles, the Light with the smaller pack has a shorter range of 232 miles. If you opt for the high-performance GT, the range drops to 206 miles per charge. We tested the real-world highway driving range of the all-wheel-drive Wind model and found it to be 230 miles before the battery required recharging. The most powerful GT model provided a highway range of 190 miles. Kia states that its battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in under 18 minutes when plugged into a 350-kW fast-charger, and we confirmed this claim. The setup is also claimed to add 70 miles in under 5 minutes. The 11-kW onboard charger is expected to recharge the battery from 10 to 100 percent in 7 hours when connected to a Level 2 outlet. 528km driving range
2024 Kia EV6 Economy
Each single-motor EV6 has a combined EPA rating of up to 117 MPGe. The dual-motor variant is rated at 109 MPGe with the standard 19-inch wheels and 96 MPGe with the optional 20s. If you opt for the high-performance GT model, the combined estimate drops to 79 MPGe.
2024 Kia EV6 Interior & Infotainment
The EV6’s interior design is not as bold as its exterior, but it still looks attractive and futuristic. While it lacks features such as a sliding center console and front-seat footrests found in the Ioniq 5, the EV6 incorporates high-tech elements like a digitized dashboard with practical features such as a floating center console that offers ample storage solutions, including a large bin underneath it. Other notable features include the two-tone, two-spoke steering wheel, the prominent start button on the centre console, and tastefully placed gold accents throughout the cockpit. The EV6 boasts a flat floor and a wheelbase as long as the three-row, mid-size Kia Telluride, providing generous passenger space. Additionally, there is 28 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seat and 54 cubic feet in total with the rear seatbacks folded flat. There is also storage space under the front trunk, although it is not as large as anticipated.
The EV6’s infotainment system is operated through a 12.0-inch touchscreen that is an extension of the digital gauge cluster. However, the menu structure and navigation design and performance are unimpressive. The system includes popular features such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. It also has the ability to accept over-the-air updates and respond to various voice commands. The stereo can be upgraded to a Meridian unit with 14 speakers.
