Car Impounded in Dubai: How to Get It Back
7 min read

If your car is impounded in Dubai for road racing, the release fee is AED 100,000. For reckless driving, running a red light, a forged plate or a driver under 18, it is AED 50,000. For illegal window tint, major modifications or driving without a plate, it is AED 10,000. Those figures come straight from Decree No. 30 of 2023, issued on 14 June 2023, and the widely-repeated "AED 50,000 Dubai release fee" is now only one tier of three.

Why a car is impounded in Dubai, and what it costs

Decree No. 30 of 2023 lists 13 cases of mandatory administrative impoundment and attaches a release fee to each. The tiers are:

Release feeTriggers
AED 100,000Road racing without police permit
AED 50,000Recreational motorcycle on a paved road; reckless driving; running a red light; forged or obscured plate; hitting a police vehicle; driver under 18
AED 10,000Major modifications; escaping police; no number plate; race gatherings or stunts; illegal window tint
Pay the finesAccumulating traffic fines above AED 6,000 on the vehicle

The bottom row is the one that catches ordinary drivers. You do not need to have done anything dramatic, letting fines build past AED 6,000 is itself grounds for impoundment, and the release condition is simply settling them. If you have been ignoring fine notifications, that threshold is the one to watch.

Repeat the same offence within a year and the decree doubles both the impoundment period, capped at 90 days, and the release fee, capped at AED 200,000. For a non-UAE-national heavy-vehicle driver who runs a red light, the decree provides for administrative deportation. Our UAE traffic fines guide covers the fine schedule itself.

Storage charges accrue daily

Separate from the release fee, the vehicle accrues storage charges while it sits. Under the same decree, where a car is impounded under the federal traffic rules in a case not covered by the Dubai tiers, the charge is AED 100 per day for a light vehicle and AED 200 per day for a heavy vehicle. And once the impoundment period has lapsed, if you have not collected the car, it accrues AED 50 for every additional day it remains in the impound area.

Impoundment periods come from the federal schedule: endangering lives, 60 days; exceeding the limit by more than 80 km/h, 60 days; by more than 60 km/h, 30 days; by up to 60 km/h, 15 days; running a red light, 30 days; no insurance or expired tyres, seven days each.

Put the two together and the arithmetic is unforgiving: a 60-day retention at AED 100 a day is AED 6,000 in storage before any release fee, and every week you delay after the period ends adds AED 350. Delay is the most avoidable cost in this process.

The release procedure, step by step

Impoundment and release are handled by Dubai Police, not the RTA. The RTA's role is registration and licensing, it blocks the traffic file when registration lapses, after which the vehicle may become liable to impoundment.

Under Article 4(c) of the decree, release requires all of the following: the impoundment period has lapsed, or you have paid the stated amounts and obtained police approval; all fines payable on the vehicle per the traffic file are settled; the violation itself has been remedied; and any further conditions set by the Commander-in-Chief are met.

That third condition is the one people miss. "Remedy the violation" means the underlying problem must be fixed before the car comes out, the illegal tint removed, the plate restored, the modification reversed. Paying the fee does not release a car that is still non-compliant, so budget for that work as part of the process.

Dubai Police also operate a Smart Impound Service, which allows a vehicle to be impounded at the owner's own premises under their care rather than in a police yard, applied for through the Dubai Police app. Abu Dhabi offers an equivalent through TAMM. Neither authority publishes the fee for this service, so ask directly rather than relying on figures quoted on forums, we could not verify any. If the car is coming back into service afterwards, confirm it still holds a valid RTA test pass.

Leave it too long and it is auctioned

This is the part worth taking seriously. Under Law No. 23 of 2015, an impounded vehicle is disposed of three months after the date of its impoundment. Dubai Police serve notice on the owner, by publication in one English and one Arabic daily newspaper, carrying the plate number, model and colour, giving 30 days to act. If you do not, the car goes to a committee that sells it by public auction.

Three consequences you should know. Dubai Police deduct all impoundment and sale expenses plus 5 percent of the sale proceeds as administrative fees. Net proceeds are held in trust in the owner's name for three years, after which unclaimed money passes to the Dubai Government Public Treasury. And critically, under Article 4(c) of that law, outstanding fees and fines do not prevent disposal, the owner "will remain liable for the settlement of these obligations."

In plain terms: the debt survives the sale of your car. Losing the vehicle does not clear what you owe. You can reclaim the car at any point before the sale is finalised by paying all expenses, fees and fines, and Dubai Police's determination of those amounts is final.

If you are buying used, there is no official way to check a car's impound history. The RTA's Technical Vehicle Status Report costs AED 120 and takes one working day, but it requires the current owner's consent and RTA states plainly that it "doesn't include the vehicle accidents data." Combine it with a free VIN and history check and a fine enquiry against the plate, a large outstanding fine balance is itself an impound trigger and therefore a red flag. Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to release an impounded car in Dubai?

Under Decree No. 30 of 2023 there are three tiers: AED 100,000 for road racing, AED 50,000 for offences including reckless driving, running a red light and a forged plate, and AED 10,000 for illegal tint, major modifications or driving with no plate. Fines above AED 6,000 require settling the fines.

Are there daily charges while my car is impounded?

Yes. Light vehicles accrue AED 100 per day and heavy vehicles AED 200 per day where impounded under the federal rules. Once the impoundment period lapses, an uncollected vehicle accrues a further AED 50 for each additional day it remains in the impound area.

Who releases an impounded vehicle in Dubai?

Dubai Police, not the RTA. Release requires the impoundment period to have lapsed or the fee to be paid with police approval, all fines on the traffic file settled, and the underlying violation actually remedied, so illegal tint or a modification must be rectified first.

What happens if I do not collect my impounded car?

It is disposed of three months after impoundment. Dubai Police publish notice in one English and one Arabic newspaper giving 30 days to act, then sell by public auction, deducting expenses plus 5 percent of proceeds. Outstanding fines remain your liability even after the sale.

Can I check if a used car has been impounded before?

Not through any official service. The RTA Technical Vehicle Status Report costs AED 120 but needs the owner's consent and excludes accident data. Use a VIN history check and enquire on fines against the plate, since a large fine balance is itself an impound trigger.

What to do first

Act on day one, because the daily charges and the three-month disposal clock both start at impoundment. Establish which case your vehicle falls under, since that determines whether you are facing AED 10,000, AED 50,000, AED 100,000 or simply a fine settlement. Then check the full fine balance on the traffic file, because every fine must be cleared before release regardless of the headline fee.

Fix the underlying violation before you attend to collect, not after. And if the car has been sitting for weeks already, understand that letting it run to three months does not make the problem go away, you lose the vehicle and keep the debt.

One preventive note worth more than all of the above: the AED 6,000 fine threshold means ordinary inattention, not reckless driving, is how most people end up here. Check your fines monthly. If you are buying rather than recovering, start with the used cars for sale and run every shortlisted car through the free VIN check.
